Desjardini Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma desjardinii)
Command attention with one of the most spectacular silhouettes in the marine hobby. The Desjardini Sailfin Tang is a premium Zebrasoma species featuring an intricate, high-contrast matrix of vertical bars, glowing orange spots, and intricate facial markings. When this fish flares its oversized dorsal and anal fins, it instantly doubles in visual size—transforming into a massive, breathtaking disk of moving art that dominates the open water.
Highly sought after for its robust hardiness and legendary algae-grazing capabilities, this active giant is an essential centerpiece utility fish for any large marine system.

Key Features & Tank Requirements
⛵ Jaw-Dropping Fin Displays
Possesses exceptionally tall, sail-like fins that it regularly flashes to establish dominance, signal tank mates, or put on a show during feeding time. Their look matures beautifully, developing richer coloration and bolder patterns as they grow from juveniles to adults.
🚜 Relentless Algae Destroyer
A premier biological control agent for large aquariums. Armed with a specialized snout, the Desjardini will continuously graze on hair algae, filamentous turf algae, and macroalgae. It is one of the few fish known to aggressively consume invasive Bubble Algae (Valonia).
🥗 High-Volume Herbivore Diet
While it will eagerly eat meaty frozen options like mysis shrimp, its primary fuel must come from marine vegetation. Provide daily sheets of dried seaweed (Nori) on a feeding clip alongside high-quality spirulina flakes and herbivore pellets to maintain its immune health and rich color.
🌊 Massive Open Swimming Lanes
Because this species grows remarkably large and thick-bodied, it requires an expansive environment. Design your aquascape with a focus on open lateral swimming channels and large caves where this active swimmer can easily glide and rest.
👥 Territorial Management
Wonderfully peaceful toward non-tang community inhabitants, but it will fiercely defend its territory against similarly shaped fish. Avoid housing it with other sailfin tangs (Zebrasoma veliferum) or similar genus members unless the system is exceptionally large (300+ gallons) and they are introduced at the same time.
