Key Features & Tank Requirements
🚜 Natural Sand-Sifting Utility
A relentless substrate cleaner. This goby loves to scoop up mouthfuls of sand, filter out organic debris and micro-fauna, and expel clean sand through its gills. This natural behavior prevents detritus buildup and keeps your sandbed looking pristine.
🦐 Pistol Shrimp Symbiosis
Like many watchman gobies, this species can form a spectacular, lifelong symbiotic relationship with Alpheus genus Pistol Shrimp (such as the Tiger Pistol Shrimp). The shrimp constructs and maintains a clean burrow for both of them, while the sharp-eyed goby acts as a sentry, guarding the entrance and flashing its fins to warn the near-blind shrimp of danger.
⏳ Thick Sandbed & Rubble Required
To support its burrowing habits, your aquarium must feature a sandbed at least 2–3 inches deep. Providing loose coral rubble and empty shells near the base of your live rock gives the goby and its shrimp partner the perfect construction materials to reinforce their underground home.
🍖 Hardy, Unfussy Carnivore
An opportunistic bottom-feeder with an excellent appetite. They eagerly accept a wide variety of meaty foods, including frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, chopped krill, table shrimp, and high-quality sinking carnivore pellets.
👥 Substrate-Level Territoriality
Wonderfully peaceful toward all open-water swimmers, corals, and ornamental invertebrates. However, they can be highly aggressive toward their own kind or other bottom-dwelling gobies unless housed in a massive aquarium. Keep them singly, or as a verified, established pair.
