Zebra Moray Eel (Gymnomuraena zebra)
Add an exotic, dramatic presence to your marine aquarium without the typical moray anxiety. The Zebra Eel is celebrated for its striking vertical black-and-white stripes and its uniquely peaceful demeanor. It is one of the very few large eels that can safely coexist in a community reef tank.
While they look imposing, Zebra Eels are shy, deliberate predators that spend their days weaving through rockwork, presenting a mesmerizing display without threatening your prized fish.

Key Features & Tank Requirements
🦓 Stunning, Distinctive Patterns
Adorned with high-contrast, zebra-like banding that instantly draws the eye. Their dark bodies and crisp white lines provide a beautiful contrast against vibrant coral reefs.
🐠 Safe for Community Fish
Unlike most morays, the Zebra Eel has blunt, molar-like teeth meant for crushing shells—not sharp fangs for catching fish. They completely ignore small reef fish like clowns, chromis, and tangs.
🦐 Crustacean Caution
Because their natural diet consists entirely of hard-shelled prey, they will hunt and eat ornamental shrimp, crabs, and small lobsters. Snails and hermit crabs are occasionally targeted but are generally safer if the eel is well-fed.
🔒 Tight-Fitting Lid Mandatory
Like all eels, they are highly inquisitive and capable of escaping through incredibly small gaps. A tightly fitted lid or screened top with no open plumbing holes is required to ensure their safety.
🦀 Feeding Routine
Requires a diet rich in meaty, hard-shelled marine foods. Feed 2–3 times a week using long feeding tongs. Excellent food choices include raw unpeeled shrimp, crab legs, clam meat, scallops, and squid.
