Black Frogfish / Anglerfish (Antennarius sp.)
Acquire a rare, shadowy masterpiece for your specialized marine display. The Black Frogfish is a breathtaking predatory marvel, boasting an ink-black, velvety body that absorbs light and creates a dramatic silhouette against your reef work. Moving like a prehistoric creature, it uses its hand-like pectoral fins to walk along the substrate and scale rocks rather than swim.
Because they are stationary ambush predators, they do not require expansive swimming space, making them the ultimate high-status centerpiece for dedicated nano tanks, macroalgae setups, or desktop species displays.

Key Features & Tank Requirements
🎣 The Shadowy Lure (Esca & Illicium)
Features a modified first dorsal spine that acts as a built-in fishing rod. It rhythmically waves a fleshy, shrimp-like lure over its head to trick nearby fish. Watching a pitch-black predator expertly manipulate its lure from the shadows is an absolute thrill.
🐍 Incredible Mouth Expansion
Do not underestimate its strike zone! A Frogfish can expand its mouth and stomach at lightning speed to swallow prey up to twice its own body length. They should never be housed with ornamental shrimp or small fish unless they are intended as live food.
🟣 Striking Neon Accents
While their bodies are a deep, uniform matte black, look closely! Many specimens feature brilliant neon orange, pink, or yellow tips on their "toes" and the edges of their fins, providing a spectacular, high-end contrast.
🥩 Specialized Predator Diet
In the wild, they consume live fish and crustaceans. Newly introduced specimens typically require live ghost shrimp or small feeder fish to trigger their strike response. With patience and feeding tongs, they can be transitioned to frozen silversides or krill. Feed only 1–2 times a week, as overfeeding can cause food to spoil in their slow digestive systems.
👥 Dedicated Species Setup Recommended
The absolute safest way to house a Black Frogfish is completely solo. If kept in a community tank, any tank mates must be significantly larger than the frogfish. Avoid housing them with aggressive nippers (like puffers or triggers) that might bite off their hunting lure, or other frogfish, as they are highly cannibalistic.
