Carnation Tree Coral (Dendronephthya sp.)
Introduce a breathtaking burst of neon geometry to your specialized marine system. The Carnation Tree Coral—also known as the Cauliflower Soft Coral—boasts highly branched structures saturated in vibrant shades of intense pink, hot orange, and radiant lavender. Supported by hard, needle-like calcium slivers (sclerites) that flash under the lights, this stunning animal expands into a majestic, fluffy tree when feeding.
While its vibrant colors are unmatched, this is a Non-Photosynthetic (NPS) coral, meaning it does not possess zooxanthellae algae and cannot feed on light. It is an ultra-premium filter-feeding marvel reserved strictly for expert aquarists dedicated to a specialized care routine.

Key Features & Tank Requirements
🚜 Continuous Filter Feeding Mandatory
Because it cannot utilize light for energy, its survival depends 100% on what it captures from the water column. It requires multiple daily broadcast feedings—or a continuous automated dosing system—of live phytoplankton, rotifers, marine snow, and micro-plankton.
🌊 Powerful, Constant Water Current
Naturally thrives on deep reef walls and current-heavy surge lines. It requires strong, constant water flow to inflate its branches and keep its polyps open for feeding. Ensure the flow is indirect so the current does not tear its delicate flesh.
💡 Absolute Zero Light Dependency
Unlike traditional corals, this species will melt or suffer if blasted with intense reef lighting. They should be placed in shaded zones, under caves, or inside deep overhangs. This makes them the ultimate choice for lighting up the dark, neglected zones of a specialized system.
⚠️ The Nutrient Balancing Act
Feeding an NPS tank multiple times a day heavily taxes water quality. To succeed, your system must utilize an aggressive nutrient export strategy—such as heavy protein skimming, a high-volume refugium, and a reliable RO/DI top-off system—to maintain low nitrates and phosphates.
🤝 Completely Passive Demeanor
This coral has zero natural defenses and will not sting neighboring corals. However, it is easily stung and killed by aggressive neighbors. Give it plenty of physical space, and avoid placing it near aggressive LPS corals or stinging anemones.
