Clown Sweetlips (Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides)
Capture one of the most mesmerizing spectacles in the marine world. As a juvenile, the Clown Sweetlips features an unforgettable, high-contrast pattern of oversized brown and cream polka dots, paired with a continuous, exaggerated "dancing" motion. This energetic swimming style mimics a toxic flatworm to deter predators, making it an instant show-stopper in any system.
While their juvenile appearance is wildly popular, this species undergoes a dramatic transformation into a sleek, silver-and-black spotted giant. Due to their large adult size and specialized feeding needs, they are a rewarding challenge reserved strictly for dedicated, advanced aquarists.

Key Features & Tank Requirements
🔄 Dramatic Ontogenetic Transformation
Witness an amazing biological shift. The dancing, polka-dotted juvenile gradually transitions into a massive, stately adult with a silvery body covered in fine black spots and thick, prominent lips.
🥩 Specialized Juvenile Feeding
Juvenile Sweetlips can be notoriously shy and stubborn to transition to dead aquarium foods. They require a patient aquarist who can offer frequent, daily feedings (3–4 times a day) of live foods like brine shrimp, blackworms, or ghost shrimp before gradually coaxing them onto frozen mysis, krill, and chopped seafood.
🛡️ Passive Demeanor, Large Footprint
Despite their massive adult size, they are remarkably peaceful and easily bullied by aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing juveniles with fast-moving, aggressive feeders like triggers or large tangs, which will easily outcompete the Sweetlips for food.
🌊 Massive Swimming Space Needed
Adults are large, heavy-bodied fish that require massive expanses of open water to cruise comfortably. Ensure your aquascape leaves plenty of open lateral room and clear sandy pathways while still providing large caves for them to rest under at night.
🦐 Invertebrate Predator
While they do not bother corals, their massive mouth allows them to easily scoop up and crush decorative shrimp, crabs, snails, and small bottom-dwelling fish. They are best housed in a massive, peaceful Fish-Only-With-Live-Rock (FOWLR) system.
