Louti Lyretail Grouper (Variola louti)
Command the open water with a breathtaking, majestic apex predator. The Louti Grouper—famed for its distinct, sweeping lyre-shaped tail—features a vibrant reddish-orange body completely covered in hundreds of glowing, iridescent purple and neon blue spots. As it cruises your aquarium, the bright yellow margins framing its fins catch the light, presenting an unforgettable display of color, power, and elegance.
While this hardy giant is incredibly disease-resistant and easy to feed, its impressive adult size and predatory nature make it a spectacular centerpiece reserved exclusively for large, aggressive marine systems.

Key Features & Tank Requirements
👑 Majestic Lyretail Splendor
Unlike blocky, cave-dwelling groupers that stay hidden all day, the Louti Grouper is an active, open-water cruiser. Their elegant, crescent-shaped tail gives them incredible bursts of speed and a regal silhouette that completely dominates a large aquarium layout. [1]
🌊 High-Output Filtration Required
As a massive carnivore with a roaring metabolism, this fish is a heavy eater that produces a significant bioload. To keep your water parameters pristine and nitrates low, a high-capacity protein skimmer, strong mechanical filtration, and aggressive water turnover are mandatory.
🪨 Heavy-Duty, Secured Aquascaping
As they mature, they become incredibly powerful animals. Ensure your live rock structures are firmly secured directly to the glass or bonded together. Unstable rocks can easily be knocked over by this giant during sudden, high-speed strikes at feeding time.
🥩 True Carnivorous Feeding
An absolute joy to feed, the Louti Grouper is never a picky eater. They thrive on a varied diet of fresh or frozen chunky marine meats, including whole silver sides, raw shrimp, krill, squid, scallops, and large predator pellets. Due to their lightning-fast strike response, always feed using long tongs to keep your hands safe.
👥 Aggressive Titan Tank Mates Only
While they will entirely ignore corals, they will instantly swallow any fish, crab, or shrimp small enough to fit inside their massive jaws. They should only be housed in a large FOWLR system alongside equally robust, aggressive titans such as large triggerfish, massive moray eels, adult pufferfish, and large tangs.
