Mandarin Dragonet (Synchiropus splendidus)
Introduce a living masterpiece to your mature reef system. The Mandarin Dragonet is famous for its mesmerizing, labyrinth-like pattern of electric blue, vibrant orange, and deep green lines that look entirely hand-painted. Moving with an elegant, hovercraft-like motion using their tiny pelvic fins, these peaceful bottom-dwellers spend every waking second meticulously hunting for microscopic prey among your rockwork.
While they are exceptionally peaceful and highly resistant to common skin parasites like marine ich, their specialized feeding requirements mean they are a reward reserved for established aquariums.

Key Features & Tank Requirements
🦐 Continuous Copepod Feeding (Mandatory)
Mandarins possess a specialized, highly inefficient digestive tract and must eat continuously throughout the day. Their primary diet consists almost entirely of live copepods and amphipods. An adult Mandarin can consume thousands of pods a day, meaning they require a mature aquarium with a thriving, established micro-fauna population to prevent starvation.
🪨 Established Live Rock & Refugiums
To maintain a stable food supply, a large amount of mature live rock (ideally 50–70+ lbs) is highly recommended. Adding a dedicated refugium to your system is the absolute best way to continuously breed and harvest live copepods to feed this active hunter safely.
🛡️ Built-In Parasite Resistance
Mandarins do not possess traditional scales; instead, they are covered in a thick, bitter, foul-smelling mucous coat. This specialized slime layer naturally repels common marine parasites like ich and velvet, making them remarkably disease-resistant.
🤝 Ultra-Peaceful Community Citizen
Completely harmless toward every fish, coral, and invertebrate in the aquarium. They can be housed with any peaceful community reef fish like clownfish, firefish, and small wrasses. Avoid housing them with fast, aggressive bottom-feeders that will quickly outcompete them for copepods.
🔒 Secure Screened Top Needed
While they spend most of their time hovering right over the sand or grazing on rocks, they can occasionally dart upward when startled at night. A tight-fitting mesh screen lid is highly recommended to protect your investment.
