Marine Betta / Comet (Calloplesiops altivelis)
Introduce a touch of pure midnight elegance to your system. The Marine Betta is a spectacular, slow-moving predator showcasing a deep velvety-black body completely covered in shimmering, starry white dots. Accentuated by sweeping, fan-like fins and a prominent false eyespot near its tail, this secretive hunter brings a sophisticated, prehistoric aesthetic to the marine aquarium.
While they look incredibly exotic, Marine Bettas are legendary for their bulletproof hardiness and remarkable resistance to common marine parasites, making them an excellent choice for intermediate hobbyists.

Key Features & Tank Requirements
🦚 The Moray Eel Camouflage
Possesses a brilliant evolutionary defense mechanism. When threatened, the Marine Betta dives headfirst into a rock crevice, leaving only its rear fins exposed. It flares its tail to display a prominent dark eyespot, perfectly mimicking the head of a venomous White-Spotted Moray Eel to terrify potential predators.
🪨 Cryptic & Cave-Loving Nature
A naturally nocturnal species that is highly reclusive when first introduced. To make them feel secure, your aquascape must include plenty of dark caves, large rock overhangs, and dim viewing zones. Once comfortably acclimated, they will actively hover in open water during feeding times.
🐠 Surprising Coral Safety
Unlike many other predatory marine fish, the Marine Betta is completely safe to house in a full reef aquarium. They will never nip, pick at, or damage soft corals, LPS, or SPS structures.
🥩 Simple Carnivore Feeding
A stealthy stalker that moves slowly toward its prey before striking. They easily transition to aquarium life and thrive on a diet of chunky frozen marine foods like mysis shrimp, krill, chopped squid, and vitamin-enriched brine shrimp. Feed them 1–2 times a day using feeding tongs if faster tank mates try to steal their food.
🤝 Peaceful Community Coexistence
Remarkably docile and completely non-aggressive toward other fish. They can be housed with peaceful community fish like clownfish, anthias, and tangs, as well as larger predators. However, ensure their tank mates are too large to fit into their mouths, and avoid housing them with small decorative shrimp like Sexy Shrimp or small Cleaners.
