Porcupine Pufferfish (Diodon holocanthus)
Meet the ultimate underwater puppy. The Porcupine Pufferfish is arguably the most interactive, charismatic, and emotionally expressive fish in the entire marine aquarium hobby. With their massive, soulful dark eyes, gentle hovering movements, and a smiling face that actively greets you at the glass, they quickly transition from a simple aquarium inhabitant to a beloved family pet.
Unlike dwarf puffers, this species grows large and imposing, developing long, prominent spines that lie flat against its body until it needs to defend itself.

Key Features & Tank Requirements
🎈 True Spiny Defense
Equipped with specialized spines all over its leather-like skin. When heavily stressed or threatened, it inflates its body with water, causing the long spines to stand straight up like a underwater hedgehog. Never use a net to handle a puffer, as they can accidentally inhale air, which is difficult for them to expel and can be fatal. Always transfer them using a submerged container.
🦷 Heavy-Duty Shell Crushers
Possesses incredibly strong jaw muscles and a powerful, beak-like tooth plate. To keep their continuously growing teeth from locking shut, they require a diet packed with hard, crunchy shells. Feed them whole unpeeled shrimp, hard-shelled clams, mussels, crabs, and krill.
🌊 High-Output Filtration Required
Because they are messy eaters and lack a traditional scale pattern, they produce a heavy bioload. A high-capacity protein skimmer, strong mechanical filtration, and regular water changes are mandatory to keep nitrates low and water quality pristine.
🦀 Clean-Up Crew Destroyer
Do not expect to keep an ordinary clean-up crew with this fish. A Porcupine Puffer will eagerly view hermit crabs, snails, sea urchins, and ornamental shrimp as an expensive afternoon snack.
🐠 Companion Compatibility
While highly predatory toward invertebrates, they are generally peaceful toward fish that cannot fit into their mouths. They do excellent in large Fish-Only-With-Live-Rock (FOWLR) systems alongside tangs, large angelfish, foxfaces, and groupers. Avoid fast, aggressive fin-nippers (like some triggers) that might pick on the puffer's slow-moving fins.
