Commanding, fiercely intelligent, and brilliantly patterned, the Large Undulated Triggerfish (Balistapus undulatus) is the ultimate showpiece predator for a dedicated aggressive marine aquarium. Also known as the Orange lined or Orange tailed Triggerfish, this striking specimen features a rich emerald green to deep chocolate-brown body dynamically wrapped in a maze of vibrant, glowing orange-yellow diagonal stripes. At a large size, this fish displays its mature, unmistakable angular profile, highly expressive rotating eyes, and the aggressive posture that makes the species a legendary favorite among large predator enthusiasts.
Why It Stands Out
  • Exquisite Mature Coloration: Unlike juveniles, a large specimen displays fully developed, intensely saturated orange stripes that run all the way to its bright orange caudal fin.
  • Unmatched Personality: Highly active and deeply curious, they constantly interact with their owners, rearrange rockwork, and can even emit audible, low "grunting" vocalizations.
  • Apex Tank Showpiece: Possesses an unyielding, fearless attitude, making it an excellent centerpiece for fish-only setups containing large, equally robust tankmates.
Quick Care & Aquarium Parameters
The Undulated Triggerfish is exceptionally hardy and structurally disease-resistant, but it is widely considered the most aggressive triggerfish in the hobby. It is absolutely not reef-safe and requires a secure, heavily filtered environment.
  • Care Level: Easy (Incredibly resilient, but demands advanced behavioral management).
  • Minimum Tank Size: 180 Gallons minimum for a mature large specimen to swim comfortably and mitigate territory aggression.
  • Reef Compatibility: Strictly NO. It will rapidly crush and consume decorative crabs, snails, urchins, and smaller passive fish.
  • Aquascaping: Arrange heavy, large pieces of rock into deep caves. Ensure the rockwork is structurally anchored directly to the bottom glass; this fish loves to dig and blast sand, easily undermining loose rocks.
  • Water Parameters: Temperature: 72–78 °F | dKH: 8–12 | pH: 8.1–8.4 | SG: 1.020–1.025.
  • Diet & Nutrition: Aggressive carnivore. Requires a highly varied diet of chunky, meaty foods to blunt its constantly growing teeth. Feed heavy portions of hard-shelled shrimp, krill, fresh clams, squid, and silversides.
